2067-2252

The following is the history pertaining to the War of 2250, one of several major wars during the World-Regional Wars of the 23rd century. In it saw two allied nations deteriorate into quick enemies and enter into a dehumanizing war. This war brought about a resurgence in Canadian nationalism as well a second exodus of Americans into the country. The War of 2250 would remain a sour note in Canada-US relations for decades even as they became member states of the United Earth Regime. It was common in political news for the Canadian government to bicker with the American administration over United Earth policy.

Arctic Incursion

2064 - American Elections, Republican Party wins. President Andrew White sweeps into office with a majority popular vote of 59% and dominates the Electoral College. The House and Senate are also under majority Republican control.

2064 - President White signs into action a bill to allow oil drilling across Alaska and any oil found offshore from the state. This is meant to appease people concerned over the energy shortage as well as corporate interests in the area. Bill sparks concern in Canada over the ambiguous territory lines in the Arctic Sea.

2065 - Although previous administrations had tacitly complied with Canadian concerns over Arctic sovereignty and disallowed corporations from exploiting the oil reserves found in the Arctic sea, President White is poised to overturn the decision.

2066 - American nuclear submarine discovered in the Arctic Sea by Canadian Forces. The opposition parties in Canadian House of Commons are appalled by the action and the indifference by the majority Tory regime. American government had reigned on the promise of always asking for Canadian permission to enter the Arctic Sea despite the fact that the Canadian government had previously agreed to always give permission.

2066 - American ships begin to move to begin construction of oil rigs in contested area of the Arctic Sea. American public is unconcerned and unaware of Canadian concerns over sovereignty. Canadian Tory government responds to growing unease amongst by sending an official protest to the American government.

2067 - China protests in the United Nations on Canada’s behalf over the breach of sovereignty, a rare act breaking neutrality. The Chinese government offers to sell Canada three small warships for a single Canadian dollar to obstruct the construction of oil rigs. The move is generally seen as China blocking America’s grab for resources. Canadian Tory government is reluctant to accept help.

2067 - America moves warships to the Arctic Sea in response to China, sparking international condemnation. Previously unaware American public is concerned over its stab into Canadian territory.

2067 - American warships accidentally sink an unmarked civilian ship, possibly Canadian or American. The embarrassing incident prompts the American government to temporarily halt the construction of the oil rigs and to move the warships out of Canadian territory. Incident remains unresolved for the years to come, leaving half-constructed oil rigs in the Arctic Sea. Canadian anti-American sentiment begins to take solid form and Canada begins to seek greater alliances with the European Union and China instead of USA. American people are unconcerned by the matter believing it to be unimportant if they are aware of the incident.

Canadian Civil War and the War of 2250

2220 - A political movement begins to sweep America as a young but charismatic politician begins his ascent through the political ranks. Erik Jensen forms a singular movement of corporate interests, money holding, media attention and public opinion. Previous concerns over the military-industrial complex were relieved by Erik Jensen, by his plan to place the corporate industry under presidential influence rather than the reverse. A private media campaign to constantly boost his support, ridicule opposition and drive attention to a select few topics serve to create a singular America.

2230 - Reverse military-industrial complex has taken hold of a large part of society. Many large companies that have direct voter population influence find themselves at the mercy of the government. Business is only profitable if taken within the confines of the actions of the American government’s planned resurgence to power. Pax Americana ended in 2173, but most upper class Americans wish a return to control over the world. At this point, not even Canada follows America into its various wars no matter the concern.

2232 - Republican candidate Erik Jensen elected US President after questionable Supreme Court ruling over election recount that would have given the victory to the Democratic Party.

2235 - President Jensen, with overwhelming public support, begins to annex nations in the poorest regions of Latin America. Official protests are made by China and Europe but the American position does not waver. Relations drastically worsen with Canada over the annexation row. Trade sanctions and boycotts, only serve to damage both economies severely. This makes the action last for only a short period of time.

2236 - President Jensen wins a landslide victory for a second term. Jensen wins through his foreign policy, the media highlighting his heroic role in standing brave despite European, Chinese and Canadian ‘interventionism’.

2240 - American Constitution is amended. President Jensen, after eight years of presidency rolls in his policy for the final destruction of the military-industrial complex, long considered the primary factor for America’s demise after the end of Pax Americana in 2173. Policies are instituted to enshrine "American capitalism" by reducing the power of corporations in dozens of new enshrined anti-trust amendments to ensure market price. It begins to end certain types of collusion between government and corporations, although subtly allowing the government to control corporations. Hidden amongst the many well-received amendments was the elimination of the two-term limitation of presidents. The amendment passes later in the year.

2240 - President Jensen easily wins a third term. American public is optimistic about its future.

2245 - USA moves to annex Mexico forcing Canada to recall its ambassador over the incident. Europe and China protest.

2245 - War breaks out in Africa, America moves to annex nation during the chaos.

2246 - Political subterfuge is widely suspected but Middle East falls into a massive war with Europe. The Great Middle East War eventually involves all of Europe, China and India.

2249 - America begins Second Marshall Plan to Europe, in return for political power in the region.

2249 - Flash War erupts between Russia and East Alliance. Nuclear war is prevented by American intervention. Canadian involvement in ceasefire negotiations blocks American attempts to establish political power in Asia. As well, Canadian involvement in Europe begins to erode American interests in the region. Dangerous tensions begin to rise between America and Canada.

2249 - Canada switches currency to the Euro amid concerns over rampant American expansionism and public fears over an invasion. Despite the devastation in Europe, the Euro still holds strong value and continues to rise dramatically fast back to its pre-war exchange rate.

2249 - Canada and Australia form a political alliance to block American holdings from growing world wide.

2250 - American government demands Canada to cease its interventionism against America. Canadian liberal government balks at the request.

2250 - President Jensen declares Canada to be led by a terrorist government and offers an ultimatum for the resignation of all MPs in power. In a rare union, the Canadian government and the opposition reject the ultimatum.

2250 - America invades Canada. Three months of warfare pass and American units are able to breach into Canadian cities. The Canadian government surrenders and is immediately disbanded by America.

2250 - The interim Canadian government, colloquially called "Vichy" Canada, is installed via straw man elections across every Canadian riding.

2250 - Interim Canadian government unanimously passes bill to temporarily disband Canadian Forces and allow the American Assistance Force all military powers. The Canadian Forces moves underground, taking with them most of the military equipment and hardware.

2250 - Political unrest pushes "Vichy" Canada to impose a curfew across the nation and to use the Emergencies Act to place the nation under martial law. Move passes unanimously.

2250 - A political group known as the "Patriots" forms, calling for peace and calm as they negotiate with "Vichy" Canada to implement more "sane" policies.

2250 - Terrorist bombing in Montreal claims lives of six American soldiers on patrol. Act blamed on local Christian and Muslim groups. Within the week, interim Canadian government discusses implementing the Safe Canada Act, meant to give extreme policing powers to the American Assistance Force. The "Patriots" group secretly pleads to "Vichy" Canada to refuse the bill imposed on them by the American government.

2250 - Safe Canada Act passes unanimously through the House.

2250 - "Patriots" hold an underground election for a violent revolt. The popular vote is 78% yes. Urban fighting erupts five days later.

2250 - Underground Canadian Forces begins its armed uprising in urban centres.

2250 - Mounting casualties prompt American air strikes against major Canadian cities and rebel strongholds. Many structures are destroyed.

2250 - Patriots begin to steal equipment from dead American soldiers and act to be as well trained as elite American or Canadian forces. This largely limits the ranks of the Patriots to intelligent and skilled peoples, while most other rebels are merely Patriot-affiliated groups.

2250 - Mass terrorist bombings, roadside bombs and suicide attacks begin as poorly armed Christian and Muslim groups join revolt.

2250 - Several months after the revolt had begun, Patriots alongside underground Canadian Forces breach an American perimeter around Parliament Hill and literally sack the government. All of the MPs are later returned unharmed; seven days after the incident but the interim Canadian government had completely collapsed. Total war sweeps Canada as 700 000 American troops and 450 000 mercenaries enter the country.

2251 - Most Canadian cities are destroyed by urban warfare and air strikes. Estimates vary but Canadian civilians caught in crossfire can possibly be upwards to fifteen million deaths.

2251 - Patriots appeal to American morality and mercenary greed to gain an edge in the war. American commanders are convinced to take alternate routes to avoid combat and instead only work on delivering aid to civilians. Meanwhile, careful bribing is done to ensure limited combat with mercenary groups.

2252 - Patriots cell leader based in Golden Horseshoe region begin negotiations with local general to stage a mass desertion. A CIA agent in the Patriots’ cell becomes a double agent and acquires large sums of illicit money to be used to bribe local mercenaries.

2252 - Underground Canadian Forces begin working more with terrorist groups to force an American pullout. Bribing mercenary units patrolling the Canadian border, underground Canadian Forces sneak in bomb materials in pieces into America.

2252 - Christian and Muslim terrorists sneak into America to collect the hidden bomb materials sent to empty warehouses. They also buy ordinary household goods to complete the bombs.

2252 - Bribed American mercenaries with Texan accents are used as drivers for two trucks carrying the bombs. The mercenaries believe they are delivering conventional bombs to attack "soft targets" in Houston, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona.

2252 - American General in command of the American Assistance Force in the Golden Horseshoe region deserts along with 50 000 soldiers. In addition, 30 000 mercenaries join the deserted American soldiers. Patriots cell leader in the area and American general shake hands on international news. American public is completely outraged and President vows action will be taken.

2252 - Two unmarked delivery trucks with fake licence plates enter Houston, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona. The bribed American mercenaries driving them leave the vehicles, arm the bomb and travel only several blocks away. They do not realize they were carrying nuclear devices built by the underground Canadian forces and assembled by Canadian terrorists. The bombs detonate and kill millions instantly.

2252 - Stock markets in America collapse amid fears of more nuclear attacks. All major cities shutdown under widespread mass panic. The economy grinds to a halt within the day of the nuclear attacks. America is unable to conduct a nuclear retaliation against Canada because all major cities were already destroyed and most of the civilian population already dead or scattered.

2252 - After a week of threats by Canadian terrorist groups and a non-functioning economy, the American President offers an unconditional ceasefire.

2252 - Canada holds election, electing mostly members from the Patriots into the House of Commons. Peace negotiations with America proceed poorly. Canada gives amnesty to all American soldiers who wish to desert, and gives a medal to every person who fought in the war.

2252 - Canada enters international negotiations for a unified world government. Canada’s primary concern is to relegate America’s power to equality with other starting member states, and to provide its armed forces for the peacekeeping wing of the new government in order to prevent another "world-regional war".

2252 - Canada remembers the close to fifteen million war dead, mostly civilians, as an American-led genocide. It sours relations for decades to come. Americans are unconcerned or unaware of the number of deaths in Canada and are largely angry at Canada over the use of nuclear weapons, giving rise to anti-Canadianism in America for decades.
